Last year the K-5 mathematics "textbook" adoption in Texas allowed the most progressive alligned teaching tools to enter all of the state's classrooms at a shockingly low costs. Those that assume that current "textbooks" are limited to paper and binding are sadly mistaken or whoring for some computer company that would like to suggest we can teach from the internet.

I would sugest donating them to GreenTextbooks.org
Save Money, Save The Planet
GreenTextbooks.org specializes in the recycling of textbooks, DVDs, CDs. Buying used textbooks not only saves you money, but cuts down on greenhouse gases caused by the manufacturing of new textbooks.
With GreenTextbooks.org you're not only saving trees, you are saving some green.

Teach math facts (Yes for now???) They need to know their math facts in order to free up their mind for higher level thinking and purely for estimation. I liken math facts to learning your letters, you need to know your letters to read and learning your math facts lets you see the patterns in math, the connections in math. I doubt there are engineers, programmers, designers who don't know their math facts. As far as cursive goes, I wonder how it impacts kids learning to write fluently or if there is a connection between the physical act of making the letters by hand rather than typing?? There probably hasn't been much research on this but I am not for tossing all the old stuff just because we have keyboards and keypads.

A five year curriculum plan, visited and updated every year, is necessary for programs that pride themselves on preparing students for futures in the real world. The tendency of politically oriented school administrators to substitute politically motivated policies for sound principles of education significantly restricts efforts by professional educators striving to adequately prepare students entrusted to their care. The potential, challenges, and obstacles that currently litter the public education landscape in America are discussed in the novel, The Twilight's Last Gleaming On Public Education, a portion of which may be viewed online by contacting the publisher at www.Xlibris.com, clicking on their Bookstore link, then Searching by title. This intriguing, socially relevant, and enlightening story possesses many of the elements commonly found in just about every school system throughout the United States. The plot contains several strategically placed twists, and leads to a well-conceived and logical conclusion designed to keep the reader's interest throughout. Check it out for youself. Discuss it with your friends. Recommend it be included with your Book Club readings. See if you agree with the solutions proposed.
